What’s the general principal for how much a company (firm) should spend on advertising?

I talked to my teacher about it and he’s not looking for a number. He’s looking for something along the lines of “a firm should spend as much on advertising as it needs to for the marginal utility of money spent on advertising equals the marginal utility of another customer.” I said that to him and he said I was on the right track. Can anyone help me improve it?

What is the best location on the page for pay per click advertising for best click through rate?

What is the best location on the page to place the adds? next to photo? close to the left? or right? after a small intro to an article? What’s the best way to make advertising revenue?
